NHCS Newsletter: WEEK 4: ACADIAN REDFISH/CRABS

Welcome to Week 4 of our Community Supported Fishery! And a special welcome to all our new Members this week, if you are receiving this newsletter, your seafood will be at your Pick up location, ready to pick up this week!
 
We have an exciting week of local seafood! The Catch of the Week is Acadian Redfish and our Shellfish offering is Jonah Crabs!

CATCH OF THE WEEK-ACADIAN REDFISH

Our fish this week is the Acadian Redfish, otherwise called "Red Perch" or as seen in many local Market Basket chains, "Ocean Perch". Often times, this fish is substituted for the tropical fish, Red Snapper. This is our northern Atlantic Grouper species! This big eyed fish looks like a tropical fish from the islands. A member of the Rockfish (Grouper) family, the Redfish is a deep water, goggle eyed, slow-growing fish that spans from Norway to Georges Bank in our Atlantic Ocean.

Not to be confused with Red Snapper, a southern species down south, the Redfish births live young (very rare with fish) and can live to be up to 50 years old! This species, once thought of as by-catch or lobster bait, is quickly becoming one of the more popular fish in the US, especially here in New England!

 

 

KNOW YOUR FISHERMEN

Our Fishermen this week for the Acadian Redfish are Guestboats from both Portland, ME and Gloucester, MASS. Since Redfish are a deep sea species, most often times they are caught by "trip boats" as opposed to day boats, like most of our NH Fishermen. Trip boats stay out at sea overnight and bring back the catch after a long trip into shore. Our two trip boats in NH are not fishing this week, so we occasionally rely on our local Guestboats for our Catch of the Week!

SHELLFISH ADD ONS and BIWEEKLY SHARES

Local Jonah Crabs this week, from our youngest Seafood Supplier, Jillian Robillard! Jillian is the daughter of our Fisherman of the Week,  Dennis Robillard.  We are so proud to support Jillian, a young woman in the male dominated Seafood industry! Jillian is still in college at University of New England and started her own business last year, Southern Maine Crabs. She buys Jonah Crabs from all the local Lobstermen and then sells them! If you know anyone looking for quantities of crabs, you can find Southern Maine Crabs here on Facebook and send a message!

If you have a Fish Share, you can get Shellfish two ways: 
  • Sign up for our Biweekly Shellfish Share: Every other week, one of the following: Scallops, Lobsters, Oysters or Crabs 
  • Or order Shellfish "alla carte", as an Add on the weeks we have Shellfish

Add on orders close on Sunday nights. Crab orders are now closed.

RESTAURANT SUPPORTED FISHERY

We have a growing Restaurant Supported Fishery (RSF), where Chefs and Retailers order fish through us, directly from our Fishermen. They are able to give customers local Catch of the Week Fish, the Captain and Boat name and the day the fish was landed! HOW TO HOLD YOUR SHARE/CHANGE PICK UP

We offer a flexible "hold system" for weeks you will be away or do not care for the Catch of the Week selection. You can Hold and Double your share for a week here. Instructions are provided. Email us if you need assistance!

You can also do a Temporary Pick up location change at the same site. Just select this from the drop down menu and choose your Pick up location change for the week. We have 22 Pickups to choose from here. 

ADDITIONAL FISH WEEKLY


Each week, we offer the opportunity for Members to order extra Catch of the Week fish and/or extra Haddock. Get your Additional Haddock here, please order by tonight at 12pm!

Orders are available in 1lb bags and discounted on all orders over 2 lbs!

PAYMENTS $$$

You do not have to be paid in full to begin receiving your share! We work on the trust system. If you haven't already done so, please send us a check for your balance to: NHCS, 1 Peirce Island Rd, Portsmouth, NH 03801. If you send a check, it saves us the 3% charge from Paypal! If you choose to pay online with a credit or debit card, do it here.
